When I began to choreograph and find my way pulling other artists’ dreams out and changing music in a visual way, there was still a part of me that had something more to say. Dreams will get you nowhere, a good kick in the pants will take you a long way.

If you’re the type of person who has to fulfill your dreams, you’ve gotta be resourceful to make sure you can do it. I came out to California when I was 21, thinking my New York credentials would take me all the way. I came back home a year later all dejected and a failure.
Judge of your natural character by what you do in your dreams.

I have very vivid dreams, and often – this happens to me at least a few times a week – I don’t know if something happened in real life or in a dream. I’m like, ‘Mom, did this neighbor come over, or was it a dream?’ And she’s like, ‘No, what are you talking about?’

My theory is that literature is essential to society in the way that dreams are essential to our lives. We can’t live without dreaming – as we can’t live without sleep. We are ‘conscious’ beings for only a limited period of time, then we sink back into sleep – the ‘unconscious.’ It is nourishing, in ways we can’t fully understand.
Joyce Carol Oates
Baseball always gets credit for the foundational part of masculinity – the father thing. The eternal game of backyard catch, ‘Field of Dreams’, the Ripkens, the Griffeys, the Bondses, so on. For me, I’m a filmmaker because, above all, I’m an explorer. William Butler Yeats
I still marvel at how God turns dreams into reality.
I’m sure I have a process, but it mostly takes place in my dreams.
William H. Macy
I went to stand-up when my rock n’ roll dreams weren’t coming true. I knew it wasn’t going to happen when I was in a New Wave band in 1992 – at the height of grunge. Then I heard No Doubt’s ‘Spiderwebs’ and I said, ‘Well, we’re done.’ They did – and succeeded at – what we were trying to do.
I really started dreaming… and broke out of my shyness when I got to Howard University. My first acting class was an Intro to Acting class with Professor Bay, who really broke me out of my shell, encouraged me to follow my dreams and make them a reality.

Now I realise how stupid that is – and it’s because comic acting isn’t taken seriously enough. It’s a discipline. You know instantly – either you’re funny and getting the laughs, or you’re not.

Irvin D. Yalom
When all of your wishes are granted, many of your dreams will be destroyed.

I part of this great nation because my grandfather was born here, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He took a horse, back in 1895, and ride it all the way down to Guanajuato, looking for his American dream. I have very specific advice for aspiring writers: go to New York. And if you can’t go to New York, go to the place that represents New York to you, where the standards for writing are high, there are other people who share your dreams, and where you can talk, talk, talk about your interests.
And our dreams are who we are.

You sail into the harbor, and Staten Island is on your left, and then you see the Statue of Liberty. This is what everyone in the world has dreams of when they think about New York. And I thought, ‘My God, I’m in Heaven. I’ll be dancing down Fifth Avenue like Fred Astaire with Ginger Rogers.’

When people ask me where I get my ideas, I lie. I tell them I draw inspiration from the news, the world, my dreams. Or I joke and say that I steal from other writers. I lie because I don’t know where ideas come from, and I’m afraid if I look too hard, they’ll stop coming.

I know how men in exile feed on dreams.
No, I never had any dreams. The process of art is a dream in itself. The artist just doesn’t… you work out something. It’s yours. You don’t have to go to sleep to do that. You do that on the canvas.
One of my dreams has always been to be in a Broadway musical.
We should never discourage young people from dreaming dreams.

Our dreams drench us in sense, and sense steeps us again in dreams.

A. B. Yehoshua
That’s where the theatre of dreams is, over in L.A.; it’s the land of opportunity for actors, and to go over there with a good team behind you and have a part you want to audition for really makes it a joy.
As an older generation, we need to give all our young people love and the possibility of realizing their dreams. For instance, if I get really political, the fact that some people can’t go to college, can’t even think about college, that’s not American; that’s not right.
My dreams and aspirations when I was a child for as long as I can remember was to be an entertainer.

Only dreams give birth to change.

Big dreams create the magic that stir men’s souls to greatness.
I have been interested in dreams, really since I was a kid. I have always been fascinated by the idea that your mind, when you are asleep, can create a world in a dream and you are perceiving it as though it really existed.
Like the phoenix, socialism is reborn from every pile of ashes left day in, day out, by burnt-out human dreams and charred hopes.

I was very inspired by Les Blank’s film ‘Burden of Dreams.’ I think what’s unique about his film and the two I’ve made is that they’re close examinations of filmmakers and how their own emotional experiences reflect in the material they’re rendering, and vice versa – how that material sometimes colors their own lives.
Real shapes and real patterns are things you would observe in nature, like the marks on the back of a cobra’s hood or the markings on a fish or a lizard. Imaginary shapes are just that, symbols that come to a person in dreams or reveries and are charged with meaning.
