I think I knew I was going to be a musician for the rest of my life kind of early. When I was in third grade, I was playing in a talent show, and my dad wrote a two- or three-minute boogie-woogie piece. I played it, everybody loved it, and I was like, ‘Wow, this is great.’
Every demo I do has a mandolin or resonator on it – some element of the bluegrass or classic country world that I grew up listening to and that first drew me in. And then I always try to find somewhere for a bluesy guitar sound, because that’s also what I love. Musically, I’m always finding my way home.
I love to play. And fortunately, I don’t know a lot of musicians that suck. I know a bunch of really good ones, and they’re always up for playing.
One thing I always loved about hip-hop music was the raw, boom-bap element – it felt powerful and manly.
I just remember falling in love with the old Chris Brown music, where it was, like, that real R&B, and I love the radio smashes he’s put out since then, but I go back to his older music for that R&B.
I loved pop music as a little kid. Things like the Black Eyed Peas. If it had a catchy chorus, I was into it.
I love that I can play around with all types of music.
I had found English audiences highly satisfactory. They are the best listeners in the world. Perhaps the music-lovers of some of our larger cities equal the English, but I do not believe they can be surpassed in that respect.
John Philip Sousa
Everything I do is a reflection of the duality within me. Musically, I really love things that are very synthetic and unnatural. And I also like the organic and human… the intrinsic, I guess.
To play your music in front of the fans that love it, it’s like the best feeling in the world.
My favorite all-time artist… I would say, I think that must be Sigur Ros, I love that band. It’s like going to the stars for me. When I put the music from Jonsi or Sigur Ros on, it’s so relaxing, it’s warm and it never gets boring to listen to, you always hear new things. Yeah, that must be my favorite band.
My process is walking down to the locker room, laying everything out to how I like it. I’m very particular about setting up my bags and my dressing situation. I love to pull out that portable speaker and blare music even if nobody else likes it. To me, its just keeping everything the same every single night.
My parents loved music, and my father would come home with cassette tapes of Chic and the Village People and Barbra Streisand. We had all these sounds always going. We never had somber music – always upbeat.
People always accuse me of being motivational in a way, like it was a bad thing, but that’s just how I was raised. My mom raised me in a positive environment, with lots of love in my heart, and that reflects in my music.
Personally, I just think rap music is the best thing out there, period. If you look at my deck in my car radio, you’re always going to find a hip-hop tape; that’s all I buy, that’s all I live, that’s all I listen to, that’s all I love.
I had a friend write me that our music was being played at Gay Pride in New York, which is a big compliment. In the biggest city in the country with the most culture and the most grit – I love it.
Listen to your inner-voice: Surround yourself with loving, nurturing people. Fall in love with your art and find yourself. Music is the great communicator.
There was so much great music around in the ’60s, stuff like The Small Faces, but I also love The Jam.
One of the things that I loved about listening to Miles Davis is that Miles always had an instinct for which musicians were great for what situations. He could always pick a band, and that was the thing that separated him from everybody else.
For me, if the music is good, whether the artist is famous or unknown, I love being part of the music and contributing what I can to the bass end.
I love that way dance music can put you in a trance.
As I grew up, I was interested in other areas, too, especially literature. It became a major love of mine. Later, it became a difficult choice for me as to whether to major in music or literature. It wasn’t until my 30s that I began a profession in music.
I love all music. Right now I am loving Josh Grobin and Kelly Clarkson.
I’d love to see a Nirvana biopic. I loved them when I was younger. I really like jazz music, so I’d like to see a Billie Holiday biopic – she was a fascinating woman.
If I’m going on any trip, driving music is key. Road Hammers is good driving music. I don’t mind listening to my own stuff. You record it for a certain reason. You fall in a love with a certain song at a certain time and how you record it is a labour of love. You better love it.
The Sound of Music was just such an honour to be in, because it was a movie that appeals to so many people, and they just loved it so much and they still love it to this day.
It just tends to be that the grass is always greener. If I’m doing a movie, I suddenly think, ‘Oh God, I wish I could just get a play script I could get my teeth into.’ If I’m doing eight shows a week in a West End musical, I think, ‘God, how lovely it would be to be in a TV series right now.’
I don’t feel guilty about the music I love. If you feel guilty about something you dig, then you should stop feeling guilty about it. One of my favorite albums to this day is the 10th anniversary ensemble cast of ‘Les Miserables,’ the ultimate cast recording, and it is still something I love listening to top to bottom.
I’ve always listened to and loved country music ever since I was a kid.
Laura Bell Bundy
I love ’50s music, all that stuff from the ’50s.
I love Rebel Rebel in Manhattan’s West Village for vinyl, but record stores are hard to come by these days. I almost don’t even use iTunes. I mostly use music subscription services. But I’ll go into Rebel Rebel once a month or so and buy everything I love on vinyl.
I’m confused that there is a lack of faith in listening to and deciding what is a great song and instead going for these formulaic, bad songs over and over again. But that’s what happened when people from beverage companies bought record labels and radio stations as opposed to people who love music owning record labels.
I’m a very lucky guy. I get to write music that I love, and lo and behold, people seem to really like it. I know how fortunate I am.
When I was 17, I listened to reggae music. I loved Bob Marley. I started growing dreadlocks. It’s always been my way, that the outside matches what’s going on with me inside.

I would love to do a musical!
Napster is great so long as they put out tracks on there that have been officially released. I don’t really mind people downloading my music; I also see it as a compliment. And if you are a real music lover, you want to have the original CD anyway ’cause then you feel more connected to the artist.
Since I was a kid, I always felt the need to share the music I love with as many people as possible, and DJing seemed like the perfect outlet.
My mother got me into music when I was a little kid. She used to play music, blast it, when she was cleaning the house, while I was crawling around. I just love loud music.
I really like the old stuff that I cut my musical teeth on, and I loved it when the industry was just like that, without really a genre. Today, country radio’s more aimed at a demographic than a genre. It just softens everything.
I love Celtic music and listening to it, but I just don’t have the type of voice to sing it.
Sophie Kennedy Clark

I couldn’t afford to go to drama school in London. Then I met with the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, and I fell in love with the city. It was one of the few schools that offered me a place. It didn’t do me any harm.
I love pop music, but I feel like the genre is overpopulated – there was so much bubblegum for a while, but I feel like Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran are bringing good, real music back to the radio.
I love music, and I once thought about doing a choral scholarship, but the people put me off.
I love Lady Gaga, Rihanna – all the pop girls like Katy Perry. I think Miley Cyrus is very talented, too. Apart from the visuals, which you may like or not like, but her music is quite good, actually. ‘Wrecking Ball’ is quite a good song, and she sang it really nicely.
I’d like to expand on doing what I love and venture out a bit more. I would like to play consistantly good music. Eventually someday I would like to open up a school and teach kids about music.
It’s not every day you get to create a band like the Sex Pistols, and what it changed, on a musical level. I love that we’ve done something that was important.
I just like the lineage and the heritage and the fact that British dance music is still progressing. I’m from London; I love London, and I wouldn’t know how else to show that love in musical terms. There’s something about British stuff that’s a bit faster, a bit harder-hitting. Just tough.
I want to live with that sense with the music I make, with the art I make, with the way I love my kids, with the way I am a father and a husband and a friend and a follower of Christ, I want to live with reckless abandonment to the truth of the Gospel.
Steven Curtis Chapman
The way that I’ve always gone about making music, the rule of thumb, has just been to make what I love.
I would love to have a go at a band or some form of music one day.
I’m a big fan of certain new acts. I love any genre of music, and I think it’s really great to see that there are new artists coming through. It’s kinda funny to think that I’m like the old man on campus now. But I’m really happy for groups like One Direction. I think they’re really good guys.
With Sumthin Else Music Works, I wanted to spread the love and give newcomers a chance to make it because something that really helped me were all the people who had given me an opportunity when I was putting my career together.
The people who I grew up making music with, we’ve all grown up and become successful in different ways. My manager supported me since I was 16 and believed in me as a musician. He’s been there since Day 1, and there’s so much to be said about doing something with people that you love.
Ooooh, I love Nashville! It seems like everywhere you walk, there’s great music coming out of every wall.
Science-fiction cities in general, I think, are so hard to get right, because it’s so easy to just play some cheesy music or do something that takes you right out of it, but ‘Blade Runner’ got it right, and I love that about the film.
One thing I’ve always loved doing is hanging out and talking music with other artists.

I grew up listening to everything. I was in rock n’ roll bands and punk bands, and I loved bluegrass and country music, too. Next thing you know, you’re a country singer.
Music had been my first love among the arts, and I was fascinated by it, as I still am.

Max von Essen
I made one rule for myself, and I really try to live it: Play music you love, with people you love, for people you love. If I can’t be that kind of musician, I’ll drive a cab.

One of my reasons for living in California is its close proximity to Mexico. The Latin influence is in every corner of the community. My love of Spanish music hasn’t wavered since the ’50s. I could hear the blues voicing from the Flamanco families and I always dig for inspiration in Latin music.

All the music I loved as a child, people thought it was junk. People were unaware of the subtext in so many of those records, but if you were a kid, you were just completely tuned in, even though you didn’t always say – you wouldn’t dare say it was beautiful.
I don’t like to use the word ‘fans;’ I call them ‘Dick Dale music lovers.’
‘West Side Story’ I used to watch all the time – I don’t know why. Well, I do – it’s a great movie. I love the music in it. I love the actors.
I love classical music. Yes, I was in a conservatory when I was younger and played guitar and all that stuff, so I also love rock.
I loved the guitar, and I had all of this music in my head. My passion for the guitar and the ideas for what I could create musically were equal. So that’s where I was.
I like doing music. I like singing. I love all music. Music kind of goes hand in hand with acting anyway.
I love dogs. I think dogs are way smarter. Maybe I can be the dog spokesman for the rock world. There are a lot of cat people making rock music.
I love Aerosmith. I love Guns N’ Roses, AC/DC, anything from that era, Led Zeppelin. So my guitar style is very much like Slash or Jimmy Page. I love playing that kind of music. It’s where my heart’s at.
I love doing concert music.
I grew up on hip-hop. I grew up on Run-D.M.C., Whodini, LL when I was in college, so I’m more of a music fan. I probably have the most eclectic collection of music in my Grand Cherokee. Literally, in a span of a week, I’ll go from 2Pac to Boyz II Men to Sister Hazel, right down to West Side Story or the Wiz. I love show tunes.
If you really love music, people can tell if you love music. You have to just stick with it.
I have such an eclectic taste in music. Come to a backyard BBQ at my house, and I will run the gamut from Skynyrd to Sinatra to ’90s grunge, rap, R&B, and classic rock. I have issues. If I had to pick one, I love this country artist named Craig Morgan. His music and his songs are so relatable and tell such vivid stories.
I love house music. I love all music.
Lovers of painting and lovers of music are people who openly display their preference like a delectable ailment that isolates them and makes them proud.
Country music is important to me, and I love it, but it’s not my whole life… I like to be outdoors, I like to hunt, I like to fish, I like to play golf.
I’ve always loved the songs of the sea. I was first introduced to them back in 1957, at the Old Town School of Folk Music. I used to go to Pete Seeger concerts, and he would do songs like ‘Ruben Ranzo’ and talk about how the sailors sang songs to do their work – to raise the anchors, pull up the sails and that sort of thing.
The funny thing is musicians often love to go to see visual art because you’ve got all these pictures to turn into metaphors.
I have never had a great love of the music business, I never have.

When you limit the word ‘jazz’ to one period of history, for the people who love that period, then maybe it can be dead because nobody plays like that anymore. But jazz is progressive music; it always has to progress, and musicians always have to find new landscapes and new ways to speak out, so of course it’s always changing.
I would love to sign on to do a movie if it was the right role and if it was the right script, because I would be taking time away from music to tell a big grand story, and spend all of my time and pouring all of my emotions into being someone else. So for me to do that, it would have to be a story worth telling.
Bob Marley is a huge influence. I love reggae music, but I also love the purpose of the songs he writes and the style of the music – it takes your worries away and makes you feel good, and I think that’s what music is about.
I guess the two Manifesto, Communicating Vessels, Mad Love, and some of his poetry made a significant mark on me but as far as bringing a literary element into the music I see it as a much broader assimilation.
I love to listen to the music that first inspired me – I get that fresh feeling back.
I loved old black and white movies, especially the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers musicals. I loved everything about them – the songs, the music, the romance and the spectacle. They were real class and I knew that I wanted to be in that world.
I just loved classical music, but I also loved playing rock guitar, and I loved playing piano, so it was a natural thing that those things would merge at some point.
Piano playing is a dying art. I love the fact that I can be one guy with one instrument evoking an emotional and musical experience.
Jon Bon Jovi
I would love to make my music and be completely anonymous, but that doesn’t work. You can’t have success and be faceless.
I still listen to a lot of the classics from Bob Dylan and John Martin, but I love electronic music as well. I’m a big fan of an Australian DJ and producer called Flume, who I think is incredible. He should be more successful in the U.K.!
Country and western is the music of the devil. That’s the real truth of the matter. My late Mother, bless her, loved country and western. God, I couldn’t handle it.
Ray had so much love of life and the music. He had so much integrity. He treated the music with so much dignity and respect. I spent four and a half years as a sideman with Ray Brown’s trio. Music was his life, more so than anyone I could mention.
My style is boho chic. I love that time period – the patterns, the prints, the people, the music, the vibe.
I just really always try to do what’s in my heart and I’m still passionate about the music; I still love what I am doing.
Singing is my passion, my first love and the secret of my energy. Music to me is like finding my inner self, my soul. It gives me a great joy to see audiences enjoying with me. I have given my heart to singing. When I sing, I can feel romance in everything around me.
I can’t work on something if I don’t believe in it. I love music, and I am inspired to work harder and spend more energy. I feel lucky that I was born with this passion.

If one uses music that one does not really love, then one will not succeed in making it one’s own.
One of the things that makes me most happy about music is that I can look at a picture and see Da Brat, Missy, Lil Kim, Left Eye, and I know Aaliyah is a singer, but to see them all in one photo together hugging and laughing and really having genuine love for each other… I want to feel that with my hip hop sisters.
I love musicals. I love horror movies and I love art movies.
But I just love that music scene so much, and I enjoy really being around those artists and watching them even more than I do performing, because they are a whole group of people that do it because they love music.
Lee Ann Womack
Nas has always been uncomfortable with being famous and accessible. Nas makes music because he loves music, not because he wants the trappings of music, such as fame.
I don’t really love to perform in music. Some people like it more, but it’s not my thing so much, but just the writing, when you get the lyric, and the lyric just goes just the right way, or you find the right bridge that takes you to the solo, and those moments are tremendous, and it’s difficult to portray.
I just love performing so much, and I threw myself into every musical theater production that was going in my home town and at school. And then, I went to the National Youth Music Theatre, which was really a galvanizing experience for me when I was 17.
I love the power of the musician who composes and performs. I envy their ability to put a nugget of truth in three minutes of sweat and emotional outpouring, colored entirely from their thoughts.
I love music in general. It’s like girls and their clothes and shoes; when you love shoes, you love shoes. So, for me, I think it’s a really dangerous thing to say I’m going to write the best dance song in the world.
I would love to have a varied career, like Hugh Jackman. He started in musical theater, then established himself in film, but he still does a lot of stage work. And he does it all beautifully.
The trouble with music appreciation in general is that people are taught to have too much respect for music they should be taught to love it instead.
My dad’s side of the family had lots of artists and musicians. There’s an emotional, quite sentimental quality to Slavic culture. It’s very open, it loves art, it loves music, it loves literature. It’s very warm, it’s very up, it’s very down. I would celebrate that.
I don’t have to compete in the charts. I can just be myself as a musician, a songwriter and play with the musicians that I really love.
I love writing songs and being a musician, but you can’t really buy the feeling of connecting with people.
Alanis Morissette – I love how she’s not afraid to say what she wants to say. Love it or hate it, she’s going to say it. And her vocals are crazy; they’re amazing, and I also love how her music is really organic.
What I’ve discovered is that in art, as in music, there’s a lot of truth-and then there’s a lie. The artist is essentially creating his work to make this lie a truth, but he slides it in amongst all the others. The tiny little lie is the moment I live for, my moment. It’s the moment that the audience falls in love.
We love not just Judas Priest music, but we love heavy metal and we love to get out on that stage every night and perform. It’s a joy to be able to do it.

A lot of people these days are not music lovers – they just want to be famous which is a very different thing to what I grew up believing in.

Dream and give yourself permission to envision a You that you choose to be.
I’m fortunate enough to be living my dreams and a lot of other peoples’ dreams.
It is all nonsense, to be sure; and so much the greater nonsense inasmuch as the true interpretation of many dreams – not by any means of all dreams – moves, it may be said, in the opposite direction to the method of psycho-analysis.
Trust in dreams, for in them is hidden the gate to eternity.
God’s gifts put man’s best dreams to shame.

Families who aren’t sure what Monday morning will bring, but who believe our nation’s best days are still ahead.
Beautiful dreams – if the world were more beautiful they would come true – But the world is relentless & cruel – people are – they must be, I suppose, or they could not live.
The interpretation of dreams is a great art.

I’ve always been interested in photographing traditions and customs – especially in America. The prom is an American tradition, a rite of passage that has always been one of the most important rituals of American youth. It is a day in our lives that we never forget – a day full of hopes and dreams for our future.
Mary Ellen Mark
In school, when I got into upper-level math, there would be times when I would wake up from a dream and have – not an answer, exactly, but a direction to pursue. My writing has always been like that. I wake up from dreams knowing which direction to go in.
There’s a logic to dreams that doesn’t necessarily follow linear narrative. You don’t know why things happen, it’s your subconscious pushing you, to give you information.

I think L.A.’s terrific. You fly an hour and a half and you’re in the mountains in three feet of powder. I also think it’s a much better city if you’re working as an actor. If you’re not working and you don’t see your dreams coming true, there can be a lot of heartache.

One of the things I’ve started doing lately is tracking my dreams.
